Programs for
*SELF-VALUE for Patients
I can definitely be considered a health communication geek, so the college students I teach encouraged me to add these programs to my professional speaking repertoire. I fell in love with this field completely by accident because it was not part of my original career goals, but I gained a lot of knowledge and experience in a health care setting as an extended-stay patient at the Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. I have expanded on this knowledge over the last ten years by researching interpersonal relationships in healthcare, teaching current and future healthcare providers, listening to and teaching patients, and keeping up-to-date on current events in healthcare. I look forward to sharing some of my enthusiasm for communication in healthcare with you! Council Bluffs, IA
Patients learn the value of their participation in their healthcare (medical and well care)
through recognizing skills, pursuing education, learning to listen, following-
through, volunteering, creating alliances with positive people, leading others, making unique
choices, and doing everything with enthusiasm
*Patients:Valuing Relationships
Patients learn to add value to the patient-physician or patient-health care provider relationship
through writing down concerns, rank-ordering concerns, thinking it through, preparing for
standard questions, stating goals, talking to the nurse, getting to the point, taking an active role,
acknowledging reservations, being assertive, and being succinct
*Patients:The Value of Speaking Up
Patients learn to prepare for the interacting with health care providers, use a format
for communicating best with providers, and how to use the LEARN method.
*Providers:Valuing Participation
Practicing medicine is no longer just about dispensing prescriptions, so providers will learn to add
value to the patient-health care provider relationship through motivational interviewing,
nonverbal encouragement, verbal encouragement, and environmental restructuring.
Providers will also learn to effectively use the biopsychosocial model of medicine to maximize time
with patients.
*Providers:The Value of Teamwork
Providers learn to effectively work with others on their teams by resolving conflict, listening
effectively, and communicating with seemingly impossible people
*SELF-VALUE for Providers
Providers learn how to add value to their practices through recognizing
skills, continuing education, learning to listen, following-through with
patients, volunteering, creating alliances with other professionals, leading teams, creating unique
experiences, and doing everything with enthusiasm
